Fall Roof Maintenance Checklist for Evansville Homeowners

October in Evansville means football, falling leaves, and — if you are a homeowner — the annual reminder that winter is coming. The Tri-State area does not get the brutal winters of the upper Midwest, but it gets enough: ice storms, freeze-thaw cycles, and the occasional heavy snow load that can stress a roof that was already showing its age.

The good news is that a few hours of fall maintenance can prevent the most common winter roof problems. Here is the checklist we recommend to every homeowner in Vanderburgh, Warrick, Posey, and Gibson counties.

Why Fall Is the Best Time for Roof Maintenance

Spring inspections catch damage from winter. Fall maintenance prevents it. By addressing vulnerabilities before temperatures drop, you give yourself the best chance of getting through the season without an emergency call at 2 AM because water is coming through your ceiling.

Fall is also the best time to schedule professional repairs. Roofing contractors are busy in spring and summer. By September and October, scheduling is easier, and you have time to complete repairs before the first hard freeze.

The Fall Roof Maintenance Checklist

✅ 1. Clean Your Gutters — Twice

This is the single most important fall maintenance task for Evansville homeowners. Mature trees throughout Vanderburgh and Warrick counties drop enormous volumes of leaves in October and November. Clogged gutters cause water to back up under your shingles and rot the fascia and decking — damage that is expensive and entirely preventable. If your gutters are aging or pulling away from the fascia, fall is also the right time to look at seamless gutter replacement before winter sets in.

Do it twice: once in mid-October when most leaves have fallen, and again in late November after the stragglers come down.

What to check while you are up there:

  • Gutters are firmly attached to the fascia (no sagging sections)
  • Downspouts are clear and discharging at least 4 feet from the foundation
  • No rust, holes, or separated seams
  • Gutter guards, if you have them, are not trapping debris underneath

✅ 2. Inspect Shingles from the Ground

You do not need to get on the roof to do a basic visual check. Walk the perimeter of your home with binoculars and look for:

  • Missing shingles or bare patches
  • Shingles that are curling, cupping, or cracking
  • Dark streaks or patches indicating granule loss
  • Any shingles that appear lifted or out of alignment

If you see anything concerning, call a professional before winter sets in. A missing shingle in October becomes a water-damaged ceiling in January. Not sure what you are looking at? Our roof inspection checklist walks through exactly what to look for.

✅ 3. Check Flashing Around Chimneys, Vents, and Skylights

Flashing failures are the leading cause of roof leaks in homes that are otherwise in good condition. The sealant around pipe boots, chimney flashing, and skylight frames dries out and cracks over time — and a Tri-State winter will exploit any gap.

Look for:

  • Visible gaps or separation between flashing and the roof surface
  • Rust or corrosion on metal flashing
  • Cracked or missing caulk around pipe boots and vents

These are typically inexpensive repairs when caught early. Left until spring, they often mean replacing damaged decking and interior drywall as well.

✅ 4. Trim Overhanging Tree Branches

Evansville's mature tree canopy is one of the things that makes the city beautiful — and one of the things that makes roof maintenance more demanding. Branches that hang over your roof cause problems in multiple ways:

  • Abrasion: Branches that rub against shingles in the wind wear away granules and eventually crack the shingle surface
  • Debris accumulation: Leaves and twigs that collect on the roof hold moisture and accelerate shingle deterioration
  • Storm damage: Ice-laden branches can snap and punch through a roof in a winter storm

Trim any branch that hangs within 10 feet of your roof surface. For large trees, hire a certified arborist — do not attempt to remove large limbs yourself.

✅ 5. Check Your Attic Ventilation and Insulation

This one surprises a lot of homeowners: your attic plays a major role in your roof's winter performance. Here is why it matters.

Ice dams — the ridges of ice that form at the eave of a roof and cause water to back up under shingles — are almost always caused by inadequate attic insulation or ventilation. When warm air from your living space escapes into the attic, it heats the roof deck, melts snow, and the meltwater refreezes at the cold eave. The result is water intrusion that can damage ceilings, walls, and insulation. See our full guide to ice dam prevention in Indiana for the complete picture.

Before winter, check:

  • Attic insulation is at least R-38 (the current Indiana code recommendation)
  • Soffit vents are not blocked by insulation
  • Ridge vents are clear and unobstructed
  • No signs of condensation or mold on rafters or sheathing

✅ 6. Inspect the Chimney

If you have a wood-burning fireplace or a gas appliance with a masonry chimney, fall is the time to check it. Look for:

  • Cracked or missing mortar between bricks (called "tuckpointing")
  • A damaged or missing chimney cap (keeps rain and animals out)
  • Flashing that has separated from the chimney base

A chimney that is deteriorating will leak — and chimney leaks are often misdiagnosed as roof leaks because the water entry point is far from where the water shows up inside.

✅ 7. Look for Signs of Moss or Algae

The dark streaks you see on roofs throughout Evansville are caused by a type of algae called Gloeocapsa magma. Moss and algae growth holds moisture against the shingle surface, accelerating deterioration. Fall — when the roof is damp from rain and leaf debris — is when growth accelerates.

If you see green or black streaking, a professional cleaning with a low-pressure wash and algaecide treatment can extend your roof's life significantly. Do not use a high-pressure washer — it strips granules and voids most shingle warranties.

✅ 8. Schedule a Professional Inspection

Even if everything looks fine from the ground, a professional inspection catches what you cannot see. Hail bruising, compromised flashing seals, and early-stage decking damage are invisible from the ground but show up clearly to a trained eye on the roof.

Rock's Roofs offers free fall inspections throughout the Tri-State area. We will give you a written report and honest recommendations — no pressure, no upsell. You can also schedule a free roof inspection online.

When to Call a Professional Immediately

Do not wait until spring if you notice any of these:

  • Active water staining on ceilings or walls — you have a leak now
  • Sagging roof deck — structural damage that needs immediate attention
  • Missing shingles after a storm — exposed decking will not survive a Tri-State winter
  • Daylight visible in the attic — any gap is a water entry point
